The BROWNS Active8 Curriculum is the result of 8 year’s in-class research, testing and feedback. By targeting all of the systems and skills that students need to gain English fluency, we ensure you receive a balanced learning diet. In the CORE classes, students follow coursebook-based lessons which integrate the 8 skills and systems. In the Active8 classes, students focus on each language skill or system individually, at their level. Overview
The Barista @ BROWNS course has been developed to better meet the needs of students who want to increase their chances of employment and improve their intercultural competence and English Language skills.
This course is ideal for international students on Student and Working Holiday visas who intend to improve their language and workplace skills to a point where they can function effectively as baristas and thus sustain themselves during their temporary visit to Australia or while studying full-time.
Visitor visa holders are welcome to join this course, however they are not eligible to work in Australia.
Duration: 5 weeks
Course Description:
30 hours per week: 20 hours of hospitality-specific English including 3 hours of focused research and group work, and 10 hours of practical training in:
SITXFSA001 – Use hygienic practice for food safety
SITHFAB005 – Prepare and serve espresso coffee
SITHFAB002 – Provide responsible service of alcohol
Specialist BaristaBoost Training in cold pour coffee, tray service and tea preparation.
Receive a Statement of Attainment for the above three competencies from the Tourism, Travel and Hospitality training package which are nationally recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework.

Overview
The English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program prepares international students for vocational or tertiary-level study in Australia and other contexts where English is the language of instruction.
The course aims to develop student awareness, knowledge and skills in the use of English as the language of teaching and learning in a vocational and/or university environment.
Learning activities will focus on writing, reading and listening, grammar and vocabulary development, oral presentation skills, research skills and web literacy. There will be an emphasis on the development of critical literacy and critical thinking throughout the course.
By engaging in such activities, students will gain increased understanding in using English to communicate in academic contexts at Certificate, Diploma, Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels.
